YouTuber Sudame removes Ganesh idol video, apologises

Pune

Social media influencer Atharva Sudame recently found himself at the centre of controversy after posting a video promoting communal harmony, showing him purchasing a Ganesh idol from a Muslim seller in Pune. In the reel, Sudame humorously interacts with the shopkeeper, whose young son addresses him as abbu, revealing their faith. Concerned that Sudame might refuse to buy the idol, the shopkeeper suggests he could buy it elsewhere. Sudame responds by saying it should make no difference and praises the seller’s intentions in crafting the idol, sending a message of unity and social harmony.

However, the video faced severe criticism online, with some accusing him of promoting a secular agenda and misrepresenting Pune. Amid the backlash, Sudame removed the video and issued an apology. He clarified, My intention was never to hurt anyone’s sentiments. I have made several videos celebrating Hindu festivals and culture. I apologise if anyone felt offended.

Despite the criticism, Sudame received support from NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar, who defended the influencer as a creative artist. Pawar said the video carried a message of Hindu-Muslim unity aligned with Hindu dharma and culture. He also criticized the trolling and suggested that the state leadership should clarify the issue or take action against those pressuring Sudame to delete the video.

The incident sparked widespread debate on social media about freedom of expression, religion, and communal harmony, highlighting the fine line influencers often navigate when addressing sensitive cultural topics. Sudame’s video, though intended to promote unity, became a flashpoint for polarized reactions online.
