Madras HC orders ‘Manushi’ screening on August 24

The Madras High Court has ordered a special screening of the upcoming film ‘Manushi’ on August 24, following a legal battle over censorship. Directed by Gopi Nayinar and produced by Vetri Maaran, the film stars Andrea Jeremiah in the lead role.

The Censor Board had objected to 37 scenes and dialogues, demanding their removal. In response, Vetri Maaran filed a case, claiming there were no objectionable elements and arguing that the Board’s actions went against established rules.

During the hearing, Judge N. Anand Venkatesh said the best way to assess the film was to watch it firsthand. He ordered the screening to be held at the Chennai Music College theater, with both Censor Board members and producer Vetri Maaran required to attend.

The case has sparked renewed discussions about the balance between creative freedom and censorship. The High Court’s involvement is seen as a significant step, with many watching closely to see the outcome.

For the makers of Manushi, the August 24 screening could be a turning point, deciding whether the film can release as originally intended or face mandatory cuts.
