ONGC and EIL Partner to Set Up India’s First Helium Recovery Plant

India’s Helium Breakthrough

New Delhi

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), through its research arm OECT, has signed an agreement with Engineers India Limited (EIL) to establish India’s first Helium Recovery Demonstration Plant at ONGC’s Kuthalam Gas Collection Station in Cauvery Asset, Tamil Nadu.

The project, valued at ₹39.42 crore (plus GST), will be completed within 18 months. Helium, a critical element for space exploration, semiconductor manufacturing, cryogenics, fiber optics, and medical technologies, is currently imported to meet India’s demand. ONGC emphasized that developing domestic helium recovery capabilities is vital for the nation’s technological progress and energy security.

The agreement covers preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR), Basic Engineering Design Package (BEDP), and project execution through an EPCM and Supply model, which encompasses design, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and performance testing.

The plant will use a technology package developed by the CSIR–Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR-IIP) to recover Grade-A helium with 99.995% purity from natural gas. It is designed to process 750 Nm³/hr of natural gas, with operational flexibility up to 110% of its rated capacity.

This collaboration leverages the expertise of ONGC and EIL to deliver a pioneering project that demonstrates advanced indigenous capability. The initiative aligns with ONGC’s vision of “Energy Now and Next” and supports the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission. The helium recovery plant marks a strategic step toward strengthening India’s self-reliance in high-value gases while ensuring long-term technological and energy security.
