Indian Railways to Adopt Airport-Style Luggage Rules

New Delhi

Indian Railways is introducing strict baggage regulations at select stations, adopting measures similar to air travel. Passengers will be required to weigh their luggage at electronic weighing machines, with penalties imposed for excess weight or oversized items, even if within the allowed weight. Baggage limits vary by class: 70 kg for AC First Class, 50 kg for AC Two Tier, 40 kg for AC Three Tier and Sleeper, and 35 kg for General Class.

The initiative will first be implemented at major stations under the NCR zone, including Prayagraj Junction, Kanpur Central, and Mirzapur. Only ticketed passengers will be allowed access to platform areas, while non-travellers must use a platform ticket, functioning as a visitor pass. From December 2026, this system will fully mirror airport protocols, with train tickets acting as boarding passes.

Redeveloped stations, such as Prayagraj Junction under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, will feature premium retail outlets, high-speed Wi-Fi, digital displays, solar power, rainwater harvesting, and spacious lounges. The nine-storey terminal will be divyang-friendly, culturally integrated, and green-certified.

The move aims to enhance passenger convenience, improve operational efficiency, and generate additional revenue. It also addresses long-distance travel challenges and the expected surge in footfall during festivals like Kumbh and Maha Kumbh. Railways plans to extend this model to stations in Kanpur, Gwalior, and other key hubs, setting a new benchmark in modern, passenger-centric railway infrastructure.
