AIFF seeks Supreme Court direction on ISL future

New Delhi

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has moved the Supreme Court, seeking clarity on the future structure of the Indian Super League (ISL), India’s top-tier football competition. The matter was heard on Monday after the Amicus Curiae brought it to the Court’s notice. During the hearing, AIFF’s senior counsel also highlighted that the National Sports Governance Bill 2025, recently passed by both Houses of Parliament, should be considered an important factor in the case.

The Court has directed all parties involved to file written submissions before the next hearing scheduled on August 22. In its statement, the AIFF stressed that the issue needs urgent attention to ensure commercial continuity and safeguard the interests of players, clubs, and other stakeholders, whose livelihoods have been affected by the current uncertainty.

Last week, the AIFF held discussions with legal representatives of ISL clubs to address concerns regarding the delayed start of the 2025–26 ISL season. The clubs raised issues about the financial and professional difficulties being faced by players, staff, and other stakeholders due to the impasse. It was agreed that these concerns would be formally presented before the Supreme Court in the next hearing.

The AIFF believes a quick resolution is crucial, not only to determine the league’s structure but also to protect the overall growth of Indian football. The federation hopes the Court’s intervention will help bring much-needed clarity and stability to the ISL.
