Rain halts Cincinnati tennis third round matches

Cincinnati

Bad weather disrupted the Cincinnati Open on Wednesday, forcing suspension of several third-round tennis matches due to heavy rain and lightning. World No. 3 Alexander Zverev had to stop his match against Brandon Nakashima when he was leading 6-4, 5-4. Play was halted at 9:03 p.m. local time because of lightning, and all remaining matches were cancelled for the night.

Zverev will resume his match on Thursday, aiming to reach the fourth round against Karen Khachanov. Also, Ben Shelton’s match against Roberto Bautista Agut was postponed to Thursday.

In the women’s singles, No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula and No. 31 seed Magda Linette paused their match after two sets, with Linette winning the first set and Pegula the second. Their match will continue Thursday at noon local time on the P&G Center Court.

Another women’s match between No. 16 seed Clara Tauson and Veronika Kudermetova was also pushed to Thursday, along with two doubles matches.

Tournament officials promised to release a revised schedule soon, as players and fans wait for better weather to resume the action.
