Ram Gopal Varma, the polarizing yet highly accomplished filmmaker, had announced a collaboration with Sandalwood’s Upendra a few months ago. However, this exciting announcement was followed by a big lull as fans awaited more updates regarding the project. Putting an end to this wait, Varma himself took to social media very recently to reveal some key details of the film.
The much-anticipated project has been arousingly titled ‘R’ with Upendra essaying the titular role who’s a rather unique and mighty successful gangster. In a series of tweets, Ram Gopal Varma divulged key information about the film and Upendra’s vibrant character, such as R’s rise to becoming the most dreadful of gangsters and that his journey began as a small street toughie in Bengaluru. He would also reveal that R was Dawood Ibrahim’s contemporary in the Mumbai underworld scene and that even the cops would often take his help to track down other gangsters! The tweets also contained multiple video teasers for the fans to feast on.
The upcoming collaboration will mark Ram Gopal Varma’s return to Kannada Cinema after a three-year-long gap, having last directed ‘Bhairava Geetha’ starring Dhananjaya. His Kannada debut came about in 2016 when he directed the docu-drama ‘Killing Veerappan’ wherein he cast Shiva Rajkumar to play the lead.
Upendra, on the other hand, will make a return to the big screen after a long gap with ‘Home Minister’. The film also stars Vedhika in the lead with an interesting premise in hand. He is almost through shooting for ‘Kabzaa’, R. Chandru’s period gangster drama.
