US vetoes UN resolution on Gaza ceasefire

Humanitarian Crisis Ignored

New York

The United States vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. All 14 other members voted in favor, describing the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic.”

US policy adviser Morgan Ortagus said the resolution “fails to condemn Hamas or recognize Israel’s right to defend itself.” She added that the language legitimized false narratives benefiting Hamas, making the draft unacceptable.

The move underscores US and Israeli isolation as the Gaza war nears two years. The veto came ahead of the UN General Assembly, where many world leaders are expected to support recognition of a Palestinian state — a step opposed by Washington and Tel Aviv.

Algeria, one of the resolution’s sponsors, voiced regret over the failure, with its UN envoy Amar Bendjama saying 14 members “acted with conscience” but were blocked. Palestinian ambassador Riyad Mansour said his people were left disappointed and suffering. Pakistan’s ambassador called it “a dark moment.”

Israel’s ambassador Danny Danon dismissed the resolution, saying it would not secure hostage releases or regional peace. He vowed Israel would continue fighting Hamas.

The resolution echoed previous calls for humanitarian aid and highlighted reports of famine in Gaza. Israeli forces meanwhile pressed on with new ground operations in Gaza City, with no clear timeline for an end.

Recent UN reports accused Israel of committing genocide, urging accountability. Last week, the UN General Assembly also reaffirmed support for a two-state solution.

The veto comes as US public opinion shifts, with nearly half of Americans now believing Israel’s response has gone “too far.”
