Just as temples are filled with devotees, libraries too should be filled with students, said Prof. M. Chandrashekar, senior professor, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysuru.
Speaking at a programme organised by the City Central Library to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, regarded as the Father of Library Science in India, as Librarians’ Day. Prof. Chandrashekar who inaugurated the programme by offering floral tributes to the portrait of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, said a good book is equal to a hundred friends, while a good friend is equal to a library.
Speaking on the occasion, Amshi Prasannakumar, a senior joiurnalist, explained the close and inseparable relationship between journalism and libraries and highlighted the importance of making effective use of library resources.
Rakhi Chennabasavanna advised students not to depend solely on artificial intelligence but to cultivate the habit of reading books. Reading makes a person complete, writing makes one precise and speech prepares one for life,” she said.
G. Anand, Assistant Professor at Sharada Vilas Degree College, said books have the power to transform individuals into cultured and responsible citizens.
Dr. B. Mallikarjunaswamy, Vice-Principal of Government Girls’ High School, People’s Park, and a member of the City Library Authority, who presided over the programme, said he had faced difficulties in life due to not having a close association with libraries and urged students to make continuous and meaningful use of library facilities.
Certificates and prizes were distributed to students who emerged winners in various competitions held as part of the programme.
Deputy Director of City Central Library Manjunath B., Deputy Director of District Central Library Suma B. Kodihalli, Chief Librarian Padmashree T., Assistant Librarian of People’s Park Library Sowmya S., Librarian of City Central Library Syed Noorussabha Salar, Office Superintendent Latha H. and First Division Assistant Shobha L. were among those present.
