Taiwan detects Chinese naval, official vessels near territory as defence ministry monitors activity amid ongoing regional tensions

TAIPEI

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) on Saturday reported detecting a Chinese naval vessel and an official ship operating around the island’s surrounding waters. The activity was recorded up to 6 am local time, with Taiwan’s armed forces monitoring the situation and responding accordingly.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, the MND said that one vessel from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and one Chinese official ship were detected near Taiwan. The ministry added that no Chinese military aircraft were observed operating around Taiwan during the reported period.

The latest development follows a similar detection on Friday, when Taiwan reported two sorties of Chinese military aircraft, five naval vessels, and three official ships operating around the island. Taiwan’s defence authorities said they continued to track and respond to the activities.

Military movements around Taiwan have increased in recent years as tensions between Taipei and Beijing continue. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has repeatedly opposed what it considers moves toward Taiwanese independence. Taiwan, however, maintains its own government, military, and economic system and operates separately from Beijing.

The Taiwan issue remains one of the most sensitive geopolitical matters in the region, involving questions of sovereignty, security, and international relations. Several countries closely monitor developments around the Taiwan Strait due to its importance for regional stability and global trade.

Earlier, China urged the United States to exercise greater caution regarding Taiwan-related matters. Chinese officials have stated that Taiwan issues carry significant implications for bilateral relations and regional peace.

Taiwan’s defence ministry has continued publishing regular updates on Chinese military activities around the island as part of its efforts to maintain transparency and inform the public about security developments.
