Trump-Kim overture alarms Asian allies

Blurb: Trump’s outreach to Kim is unsettling Asian allies, raising fresh questions about Washington’s reliability and long-term security commitments.

Donald Trump’s renewed outreach to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is deepening concerns among allies in Asia about Washington’s reliability, as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and India reassess their security ties with Washington.

Trump’s decision to reduce military drills with South Korea last week, describing them as hostile to Pyongyang, has unsettled partners concerned about his approach. Washington also cancelled another Marine exercise with Seoul, citing pressure on U.S. forces linked to Iran.

The moves come as Trump seeks to restart talks with Kim and secure a diplomatic win. A person briefed on talks said Trump is eager for a new meeting, but Pyongyang has responded cautiously so far.

North Korea meanwhile fired suspected ballistic missiles off its east coast, triggering alerts in South Korea and Japan. Tokyo fears engagement could embolden Pyongyang and weaken confidence in Washington.

Japan is also preparing negotiations with Washington over its financial contribution toward hosting U.S. forces. A senior Japanese government official said Tokyo is concerned Trump could suddenly demand a substantial increase in payments.

Taiwan is watching a Trump-Xi Jinping summit, while India is increasingly uncertain about its place in Washington’s strategic calculations.

Analysts say the uncertainty could have wider consequences for regional security across Asia. Jeremy Chan of Eurasia Group said the decision to reduce exercises would fuel doubts about U.S. commitments.

For Asian partners, the issue extends beyond North Korea: they are weighing whether Washington’s promises remain dependable for allies as Trump prioritises negotiations, defence spending and domestic political considerations.
