The district’s prominent tourist attraction, the Fort, has been developed at a cost of Rs. 28.40 crore, including the installation of a sound and light system, construction of footpaths, and other essential infrastructure, said Deputy Commissioner T. Venkatesh. He made these remarks while presiding over the District Tourism Development Committee on Friday.

Efforts are underway to make the Fort, a key site among the country’s forts, more attractive and to widely promote its historical significance. Officials have also initiated steps to obtain permission from the Archaeological Survey of India. Basic amenities, including footpaths and toilets, have been provided within the Fort.

The Deputy Commissioner directed officials to prepare and submit an action plan for additional works costing Rs. 5 crore. These include constructing a cafeteria for tourists, building a museum through the State Archaeological Survey Department, and installing railings at areas where visitors face difficulty accessing key sites.

The Fort attracts over 35,000 tourists each month. However, accessibility remains a challenge due to narrow roads and encroachments, making vehicle access difficult. Parking near the Fort has also become a major concern. A meeting under the chairmanship of the District In-charge Minister will be held soon to clear the road from Gandhi Circle to the Fort, remove illegal encroachments, and devise an appropriate parking system for visitors.
