Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala and Indonesia’s Janice Tjen both secured dominant wins on Wednesday night to book a quarterfinal clash at the Sao Paulo Open.
Eala beat Argentina’s Julia Riera 6-1, 6-4, marking her third quarterfinal of the season. She converted all three break points in a quick first set and held off a late fight from Riera in the second. Eala has spent less than 2.5 hours on court this week.
“It feels like home here. The Brazilian crowd has been amazing,” Eala said after the match.
Tjen also impressed with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Martina Okalova, reaching her first WTA quarterfinal. Her match lasted only 52 minutes, and she dominated by converting six break points and winning 86% of points on her first serve.
This is a historic moment for Indonesia — Tjen is the first Indonesian woman to reach a WTA quarterfinal since 2004.
The upcoming match between Eala and Tjen will be their first career meeting. Eala hopes to reach her third WTA semifinal of 2025, while Tjen is chasing her first ever.
