Naviluthirtha Dam Reaches Full Capacity for 11th Time

Naviluthirtha Dam in Belagavi has reached full capacity for the 11th time, bringing relief to farmers and local communities

Belagavi

The Malaprabha River is flowing at full strength following abundant rains in the Kanakumbi Ghat area of Khanapur. The Naviluthirtha Dam, a crucial water source for residents of thirteen taluks across four districts, has been completely filled for the 11th time this season.

To ensure the dam’s safety, an inflow of 4,904 cusecs has been released: 3,500 cusecs from the crest gate, 200 cusecs to the right bank canal, 200 cusecs to the Naragunda branch canal, and 194 cusecs allocated for drinking water. Officials have warned that increased rainfall could further raise inflows, prompting possible additional releases as a precaution. Residents in the river basin have been advised to stay alert.

From June 1 to date, the taluk has received 220.4 mm of rainfall, 72 percent above normal, filling the dam and bringing relief to the local population. MLA Vishwas Vaidya noted that the dam’s dedication will be conducted soon.

However, overtopping has been observed in multiple locations within the Ramadurga and Naragunda watersheds. If these blockages are cleared, the river can flow smoothly despite high water levels. Currently, overtopping is causing water to enter riverside villages, resulting in damage. Naviluthirtha Dam AEE Vivek Mudigowda urged concerned department officials to carry out clearance work promptly to prevent further harm.

The ample water supply from the filled dam is expected to support farmers and enhance agricultural activities across the region.
