With the southwest monsoon expected to arrive soon, authorities in Udupi district have intensified a district-wide pre-monsoon sanitation campaign to prevent disease outbreaks and improve cleanliness.
The “Pre-Monsoon Cleanliness Campaign” has been launched under the guidance of the Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat and is currently being implemented in most gram panchayat areas across the district.
Officials stated that 142 of the district’s 155 gram panchayats are actively participating in the drive. So far, sanitation work covering 1,35,143 metres has been completed and nearly 22,998 kg of dry waste has been cleared.
The campaign focuses on cleaning drains, roadsides, public areas and stagnant water spots to ensure smooth drainage during monsoon and reduce mosquito breeding. Authorities are also giving importance to reducing plastic pollution.
Among all taluks, Kundapura has recorded the highest progress. More than 46,000 metres of area has been cleaned and over 5,500 kg of plastic waste collected there.
Officials further said Hebri and Byndoor taluks have achieved full participation from all gram panchayats.
The district administration has also initiated strict enforcement against littering and improper waste disposal. A total fine of Rs 38,700 has been collected from 17 violators through gram panchayat officials.
Authorities said the campaign will continue in the coming days to ensure villages remain clean and prepared before heavy rains begin.
