Nayarit
At least 11 people have died and 31 others were injured after a tourist bus lost control and overturned on a highway in western Mexico’s Nayarit state. The accident took place near the town of Amatlán de Cañas during the Labour Day holiday weekend.
According to state authorities, the bus was travelling from the neighbouring state of Jalisco and was carrying passengers heading to a recreational centre in Nayarit when it veered off the road and overturned. Emergency teams from both Nayarit and Jalisco rushed to the scene and launched rescue operations. The highway was temporarily closed to assist in recovery work and to investigate the cause of the crash.
Images released by local officials showed the bus lying on its side and covered in mud, highlighting the severity of the accident.
Authorities said investigations are underway to determine what caused the driver to lose control. Survivors were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while rescue workers continued searching the area for any additional victims.
Deadly bus accidents are common on Mexico’s highways due to heavy dependence on road transport and limited passenger rail services. Similar incidents in recent years have claimed dozens of lives across the country.
The government has announced plans to expand the national rail network to improve transport safety and reduce reliance on long-distance bus travel, especially in tourist and intercity routes across Mexico.
