US and Philippine forces on Saturday displayed the NMESIS anti ship missile system in Batanes province near Taiwan during annual war games. The drills come as tensions remain high over Taiwan, which China claims as its territory. Batanes is the northernmost Philippine province, close to the Luzon Strait and only about one hundred miles from Taiwan. The NMESIS system was flown in by a US C one thirty aircraft and placed in Basco town for training use. It can hit ships from land using missiles with a range of about one hundred fifteen miles and is designed for remote operation. U S Staff Sergeant Darren Gibbs said the system allows troops to train in new environments and operate without a driver inside the vehicle.
Officials said the weapon is not used in live firing and will be withdrawn after the exercises finish. The exercise named Balikatan involves more than seventeen thousand troops from the Philippines and United States across several locations. China has criticized the presence of American weapons in the Philippines saying it increases regional tension and military rivalry. Security analysts say the missile system could act as a deterrent in the Luzon Strait area near Taiwan. Philippine officials also said contingency plans exist to evacuate citizens from Taiwan if conflict breaks out.
The deployment is part of closer military cooperation between Washington and Manila amid growing security concerns in the region. It also reflects efforts to test how quickly advanced weapons can be moved to remote islands in case of emergency. Local officials in Batanes said the presence of troops brought attention to the strategic importance of their quiet island province. The Luzon Strait, where Batanes is located, is seen as a key waterway between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Military observers say exercises like this signal readiness and aim to strengthen alliances in the Indo Pacific region.
