Vande Bharat Coastal
Subramanya
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that the long-awaited Bengaluru–Mangaluru–Madgaon Vande Bharat Express is expected to begin operations soon, offering a high-speed rail connection between Karnataka’s capital, the coastal city, and Goa’s major rail hub.
The proposed service is aimed at improving connectivity across Karnataka and Goa, significantly reducing travel time between the interior and coastal regions. Officials indicated that the train could be introduced before the onset of the monsoon season, subject to final safety approvals and completion of technical checks.
According to railway sources, electrification work on the Hassan–Mangaluru stretch is in its final stages, which is a key requirement for the operation of the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat trains. Trial runs have already been conducted on parts of the route, indicating progress toward operational readiness.
The new train is expected to cut down travel time considerably compared to existing road and rail options, which currently take longer due to the challenging terrain of the Western Ghats. This improvement is expected to benefit daily commuters, students, professionals, and business travellers.
The route is also expected to boost tourism, as it passes through scenic stretches of the Western Ghats and the Konkan coastline, known for their natural beauty.
Officials say the project is part of a broader effort to modernise India’s rail infrastructure and improve inter-city connectivity in southern India. Once launched, the service is expected to strengthen economic ties between Bengaluru, coastal Karnataka, and Goa, while also supporting regional development and tourism growth.
