Veteran Indian golfer Vijay Kumar, one of the most accomplished figures in the country’s professional circuit and winner of the 2002 Indian Open, passed away at the age of 57 following a heart attack in his hometown Lucknow.
Kumar, who turned professional in 1988, was widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Indian golf, dominating the domestic circuit through the mid-1990s and early 2000s with consistent performances and multiple title wins.
His most iconic achievement came in 2002 when he lifted the prestigious Indian Open title, a victory that remains a defining moment in Indian golf history. He is among a select group of only nine Indian golfers to have won the tournament.
Over the course of his career, Kumar also secured the Order of Merit title four times, underlining his dominance and consistency across seasons on the domestic tour.
Beyond his domestic success, Kumar represented India at the Alfred Dunhill Cup in 1999 at St Andrews, Scotland, showcasing his talent on the international stage and contributing to India’s growing presence in world golf during that era.
Known for his calm temperament, precision, and strong competitive mindset, Kumar earned immense respect from peers and young golfers alike. His professionalism and discipline made him a role model for aspiring players across the country.
In a statement, Kapil Dev, President of the DP World Professional Golf Tour of India, paid tribute to the late golfer, calling him a true stalwart of Indian golf.
“Vijay Kumar ji was one of the true stalwarts of Indian golf. His achievements, humility and commitment to the sport made him a role model for generations of golfers. His passing is a great loss to Indian golf,” Dev said.
Kumar’s contribution went beyond trophies, as he played a significant role in inspiring the next generation of Indian golfers during a formative phase for the sport in the country.
He is survived by his family and leaves behind a legacy defined by excellence, consistency, and dedication to Indian golf.
