Gadag launches mission to digitize ancient manuscripts

Officials discussed survey methods, coordination, monitoring, and ethics for preserving Karnataka’s cultural heritage using technology. Collector urged timely progress and inter-departmental cooperation

C. N. Sridhar said a major initiative has been launched to preserve and digitize centuries old manuscripts under the central government’s Jnana Bharatham Mission. He chaired a meeting at the Collector’s office on Monday to review steps for protecting cultural heritage using modern technology. He said the project aims to safeguard handwritten texts documents and manuscripts by digitizing them and uploading details to a national mobile application. This will help create a central database and make valuable knowledge accessible to the public. He said the state plans to survey preserve translate and publish rare manuscripts to ensure they are available for future generations.

Assistant Director of Tourism Kotreshwar Vibhuti said a statewide survey has begun and committees have been formed at state and district levels to carry out the work effectively. The district committee led by the collector includes officials experts and representatives from institutions. They will identify manuscripts in libraries temples monasteries educational institutions and private collections.

They will also support documentation cataloging and awareness activities among local communities. Officials discussed survey methods coordination monitoring and ethical guidelines during the meeting. The initiative aims to protect Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage and ensure its proper use through technology driven preservation efforts. Other officials including Gangappa Rajarama Pawar Srinivasamurthy Kulkarni and academic representatives attended the meeting and shared inputs on implementation. The collector stressed timely progress and coordination among departments to successfully complete the project.

He said the mission will help preserve history language and traditional knowledge systems while making them accessible through digital platforms for researchers students and the general public across the country in coming years ahead ensuring cultural continuity and knowledge preservation effectively.
