The agreement to prolong the ceasefire was reached during a meeting brokered by Donald Trump, who emphasized that he was willing to wait for what he described as the best deal to bring a lasting end to the ongoing conflict with Iran. The ceasefire extension comes amid continued hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah, which has been a major obstacle in resolving the wider regional crisis now entering its eighth week.
The conflict has also been complicated by Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its strategic control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping corridor through which nearly 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass. Despite mounting pressure, Trump reiterated that the United States holds a strong position in the ongoing naval standoff and dismissed Iranian threats as exaggerated.
His remarks came shortly after Iran showcased its control over the strait, raising concerns about global energy supplies. Although Trump downplayed the threat posed by Iran’s small naval vessels, recent incidents suggest otherwise. The capture of two large cargo ships by Iranian forces has underscored Tehran’s ability to disrupt maritime trade and influence oil markets.
The Philippine government confirmed that 15 of its citizens were aboard the seized vessels and are believed to be safe. Officials expressed optimism that the ships would soon be released. Meanwhile, global shipping operations remain uncertain. A major container shipping company reported that one of its vessels successfully passed through the strait, although details of the transit remain unclear.
Before the conflict, approximately 130 vessels crossed the strait daily. However, navigation has been significantly affected by ongoing tensions, contributing to rising oil prices and increased volatility in global markets. Despite a ceasefire announced earlier in April, uncertainty persists following its last-minute extension. Iran has continued to deny claims of internal instability. Mojtaba Khamenei rejected assertions of leadership turmoil, calling them misleading attempts to weaken national unity.
