West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to the Election Commission, alleging a conspiracy to tamper with voter lists ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. She claimed BJP agents were submitting large numbers of fake Form 6 applications to include non-residents in the state’s electoral rolls.
In her letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, Banerjee described the move as “voter hijacking” and accused the BJP of repeating tactics allegedly used in other states. She said thousands of fraudulent applications were being filed at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer in West Bengal and in several districts.
The Chief Minister also raised concerns over delays in processing genuine voter applications. She claimed that over 60 lakh valid applications are still pending, while authorities are allegedly fast-tracking suspicious bulk submissions. According to her, this goes against Supreme Court directions and threatens free and fair elections.
Banerjee urged the Election Commission to immediately stop the alleged exercise and ensure that no fake voters are added after the final electoral roll was published on February 28, 2026. She stressed the need for transparency and protection of voting rights.
In her communication, she said the reported actions, if true, would be illegal and unconstitutional. She also warned that people in the state are closely watching developments.
Earlier, Banerjee had criticised the BJP during a rally, accusing the party of creating unrest ahead of elections. She claimed such actions could affect social harmony and daily life in the state.
The BJP has not yet responded to the allegations. The Election Commission is also yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
