Rain disrupts life in north Karnataka districts

Normal life in the districts of north Karnataka (both Kalyana Karnataka and Kittur Karnataka) was disrupted, as it rained almost throughout the day with some districts receiving heavy rainfall. Holidays were declared for schools and colleges for the day in most districts.

Belagavi recorded 96 mm of rainfall in two days, which is at least 50% higher than the average for the same period. Water entered houses in some areas in Vijayapura and Belagavi.

Heavy rain on Thursday and Friday morning caused traffic jams at various points in the city. Water entered houses in low-lying areas in Kariyappa Colony, Maratha colony, Gandhi colony, Shastri Nagar, Jakkeri Honda Sai Nekar Colony, and Mahadwar Road.

Abhay Patil, MLA, and some members of the city corporation visited some affected areas and spoke to residents.

Lakshmi Rathod, a homemaker in Kashinakeri in Vijayapura, pleaded before media persons that her house was inundated and food grains and vegetables were washed away.

Videos of this clip were shared widely across social media following which, MLA Devanand Chauhan, visited her house and distributed food packets to the family.

According to farmers, various horticultural crops were affected in villages of Wadagaon, Halaga, Machche, Basavana Kudachi, Kadoli, Uchagaon, and other villages, Sidagouda Modagi in Belagavi district.

The residents of Hirenarti village in Kundagol taluk of Dharwad district have been cut off from their village. Channaveeraiah P Hiremath, who works as a packing contractor at a printing unit near Hubli, said that both the bridges that connect their village from Kundagol side and from Yaraguppi side were submerged.

Hundreds from Hirenarti travel daily to Hubli for work in construction and in various offices. They have not returned home from Thursday and we cannot go today also, he said.

Meanwhile, Minister for Handloom and Textiles Shankar Patil Munenakoppa visited the rain-affected villages of Bhandiwad, Nagaralli, and Mantur in Hubli taluk and told media persons that a survey on the rain damages would be taken up immediately.  He said due to spate in Benni Halla and Tuppiri Halla, farmlands in several villages had been inundated. The Rs. 312 crore project for finding permanent solution to spate in Tuppari Halla had already been initiated, he said.

Deputy Commissioner M Sundaresh Babu visited rain-affected places in Mulagund, Mundaragi, Laxmeshwarand Shirahatti taluks of Gadag district and heard the grievances of the people.

He said that taluk officials had been directed to visit affected areas and expedite relief works. Assistant Commissioner Annapurna Mudakammanavar also visited various affected places in the district and directed the officials to initiate relief works immediately
