New Delhi
The Indian National Congress on Sunday marked its 140th Foundation Day with a solemn flag-hoisting ceremony at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi, bringing together the party’s top leadership and senior functionaries. The event was attended by Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, along with several veteran leaders and party workers.

Sharing details of the ceremony on social media platform X, the Congress said that Kharge hoisted the party flag in the presence of senior leaders and urged members to take the Congress’s vision and ideology to every individual. The party reiterated its commitment to ensuring social justice for all and working towards building a prosperous and inclusive India.

Addressing party workers after the flag hoisting, Kharge congratulated Congress members on the milestone Foundation Day and extended advance New Year greetings. Recalling the party’s origins, he said the Congress was founded on December 28, 1885, in Mumbai, and underscored the immense sacrifices made by millions of Congress workers during India’s freedom struggle. He noted that countless members went to jail and endured hardships to secure independence for the nation.

Paying tribute to freedom fighters, Kharge said the Congress, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, united women, the poor, and people from all sections of society into a mass national movement. He highlighted that the historic 1931 Karachi resolution later became a foundational pillar of India’s Constitution, while cautioning that democracy in the country was currently under threat.

Highlighting significant milestones, Kharge pointed out that the nation is observing 75 years of the adoption of the Constitution, the 150th birth anniversary of the Constitution, and the centenary of Sarojini Naidu becoming Congress president. He observed that while many countries that gained independence around 1947 struggled or slid into dictatorship, India alone sustained a democratic system, which he attributed to the foresight and sacrifices of Congress leaders.
