“The Congress has no concern for the identity of Assam and its people. They are interested only in power and doing things they did before.” —–Narendra Modi, Prime Minister
GUWAHATI
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday sharply criticised the Congress for allegedly settling illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Assam to consolidate its vote bank, asserting that the BJP-led “double-engine government” was correcting decades of policy neglect in the state. Speaking after laying the foundation stone for a Rs 10,601 crore brownfield ammonia-urea fertiliser plant in Dibrugarh, Modi accused the Congress of promoting an anti-India agenda and ignoring the identity and aspirations of the Assamese people.
“The Congress has no concern for Assam’s identity. They are interested only in power,” he said, adding that the party preferred illegal migrants to strengthen its electoral base, even at the cost of Assam’s welfare. Modi warned that the state must be protected from the “poison” of appeasement and vote-bank politics, assuring citizens that the BJP would safeguard Assam’s honour and identity.
Modi also highlighted the BJP government’s developmental achievements in Assam, contrasting them with Congress’ past neglect. He noted that previous governments ignored industrial infrastructure, particularly fertiliser units, causing repeated shutdowns that harmed farmers and workers. Under the BJP, urea production nationwide has increased from 225 lakh metric tonnes in 2014 to 306 lakh metric tonnes, while land rights for Assam’s tea garden communities have been granted, ensuring dignity and livelihood.
Earlier, Modi paid tribute at Swahid Smarak Kshetra, Guwahati, honoring the martyrs of the Assam Movement.
