New Delhi

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted that India is entering a “decisive phase” in negotiations with the European Union on a free trade agreement. Speaking with Netherlands Foreign Minister David van Weel, he emphasised the importance of support from key EU members, including the Netherlands.

Jaishankar noted the strong bilateral ties with the Netherlands, describing it as a key EU partner. He pointed out that recent agreements have expanded cooperation, particularly in trade, security, defence, and emerging technologies, while stressing there is potential to further raise the ambition of the relationship. He also expressed interest in the Netherlands’ views on global and regional developments.

Van Weel underlined the need for democracies to collaborate amid changing geopolitics. He praised progress in bilateral engagement and welcomed the signing of a Letter of Intent to enhance cooperation in security, defence, and technology. He noted that despite differences in size, the two countries share similar perspectives and are keen to strengthen ties.

Earlier, Jaishankar met members of India’s multi-party parliamentary delegations who represented the country at the United Nations General Assembly. He appreciated their efforts in presenting India’s views on global issues and engaging effectively with international counterparts. The meeting allowed the minister to hear directly from the parliamentarians about their experiences and feedback from the UNGA sessions.

Jaishankar thanked the delegates for articulating India’s positions on international platforms, reinforcing the country’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy while seeking strategic support from the Netherlands in the ongoing EU free trade negotiations.
