The Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the creation of a Sanatan Dharm Raksha Board. Chief Justice Manmohan, leading the bench, stated that the issue fell under the policy domain and could not be addressed by the court. Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, who was also part of the bench, suggested that the petitioner approach the government to address the concerns raised in the PIL.
The petition, filed by the Sanatan Hindu Sewa Sangh Trust, argued that followers of Sanatan Dharma, also known as Hinduism, lacked a dedicated body to protect their rights and traditions. It sought a direction for the formation of a board, similar to those for other religions, like the Muslim Waqf Board or the Sikh Parbandhak Committee. The PIL highlighted concerns about the community facing challenges, such as religious conversions, and claimed that the government had failed to safeguard the rights and customs of Sanatan Dharma followers. The petition emphasized that, given the large Hindu population, the government is obligated to provide protection and facilities for their religious practices.
