After more than a decade, the much-awaited Khadi Utsav is set to return to the district, coinciding with the 14th year since the district’s formation. The first Khadi Utsav was held in 2013, as per officials from the Khadi and Village Industries Department.
Khadi, once a symbol of the freedom struggle, has seen a decline in popularity over the years. While traditional khadi-making is still practiced in parts of the district, such as Surapura, Shahapur, and Hunasagi taluks, particularly in the Kodakal area, the demand for khadi products has dwindled due to limited promotion.
The state-level Khadi and Village Industries Exhibition and Sale, organized by the Karnataka State Khadi and Village Industries Board in collaboration with the Industries and Commerce Department, will be held in three stages—district, state, and national. Local resident Indudhar Srinivas emphasized the need for regular events to increase awareness about khadi.
The three-week-long Utsav will feature demonstrations on khadi yarn production and highlight the benefits of khadi fabric, which is known for its warmth in winter and coolness in summer. CH Manisha, Khadi and Village Industries Officer, stated that the event will provide visitors with a deeper understanding of khadi production. B Satish Kumar, Joint Director of the District Industries Centre, urged the public to support the event and contribute to its success.
