PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti emphasized that Article 370 is a deeply emotional issue for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and urged the National Conference (NC) to clarify its position on the matter. Earlier this month, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly passed a resolution calling for the restoration of the region’s special status under Article 370, which was opposed by the BJP, holding 29 seats in the assembly.
Mufti, the former Chief Minister, pointed out that the current government holds a strong mandate from the public and should address this issue with clarity and pride. She criticized the NC for its cautious and ambiguous approach when the resolution was introduced, noting that it failed to clearly condemn the events of August 5, 2019, when Article 370 was revoked. According to Mufti, this lack of a firm stance reflected weakness rather than strength.
Mufti also criticized the Congress for fueling confusion by claiming the resolution was about statehood and not Article 370, further raising doubts among the public. She called on the government to provide a clear and unambiguous position. The restoration of Article 370, the return of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, and the implementation of autonomy were key points in NC’s election manifesto. The issue also sparked heated debate during the recent legislative assembly session.
