The District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) reports a notable number of children in Dakshina Kannada diagnosed with mental health conditions, especially Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Intellectual Disability (ID). Recent years have also seen a rise in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) cases, say psychiatrists.
Greater awareness among parents and caregivers in Dakshina Kannada is encouraging mental health experts, who observe a decline in stigma surrounding mental health issues like depression, mood disorders, addiction, and conduct issues. Parents are increasingly proactive in seeking professional support for their children.
Dr. Prajakta V. Rao, DMHP Consultant Psychiatrist, highlighted that between May and December 2023, 623 children under 18 received help from DMHP, and from January to October 2024, 734 more sought services. Most cases involved ADHD and ID, along with conditions like ASD, clinical depression, behavioral disorders, and substance dependence on drugs, alcohol, nicotine, and even internet addiction. ADHD cases receive medication as needed, while ID cases are supported with certifications for government programs. Dr. Rao noted cases of substance abuse, including cannabis use among some schoolgirls.
Observing the rising ASD cases, Dr. Avinash Kamath of KMC Hospital suggests parental age and other factors may contribute to this trend. Additionally, District Mental Health Officer Dr. C.N. Sudarshan noted that the district’s Deputy Commissioner has launched an anti-drug program in schools, with trained teachers and access to counselors at district and taluk health centers.
