The Union government is poised to inaugurate the BRIC – National Agri-Food Biomanufacturing Institute (BRIC-NABI) today (Monday) in Mohali, Punjab. This initiative aims to bolster India’s capabilities in agricultural biotechnology and bioprocessing.

BRIC-NABI will focus on the development of high-yield crops and sustainable biomanufacturing technologies, as well as the creation of value-added products derived from agricultural resources. The Ministry of Science & Technology highlighted that the institute aims to bridge India’s biomanufacturing gap by establishing large-scale production facilities and nurturing startups, positioning India as a leader in sustainable agri-food solutions.

The initiative aligns with the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) by promoting self-reliance, job creation, and sustainable economic growth within the agri-food sector. The institute is also committed to supporting the government’s goals of ‘doubling farmers’ income’ and advancing the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Research at BRIC-NABI will focus on genetic manipulation, metabolic pathways, and biomanufacturing processes, aimed at developing practical solutions for the Indian agriculture sector. This includes creating biofertilizers, biopesticides, and processed food ingredients designed to enhance sustainable farming practices, boost crop yields, and provide new revenue streams for farmers.

In addition to research and development, the institute will foster partnerships with international organizations and industries to facilitate technology transfer and commercialization. A BioNEST BRIC-NABI Incubation Centre will also be launched, which will play a vital role in connecting research with industry. The centre aims to promote entrepreneurship and innovation in the agriculture and bioprocessing sectors.
