Nestlé India has commended the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for becoming more proactive and focused on the industry over the past decade, particularly in enhancing NABL-accredited laboratories for credible food testing. According to Nestlé India Chairman and Managing Director Suresh Narayanan on Sunday, the agency’s transformation followed the Maggi noodles crisis in 2015, which put FSSAI in the spotlight.

The crisis arose when FSSAI banned Maggi noodles over allegations of excessive lead content, forcing Nestlé to withdraw the product. However, after relaunching Maggi later that year, Nestlé regained its dominant market position, boasting over 60% of the instant noodles market share in India.

Narayanan highlighted that FSSAI has significantly improved its responsiveness and has fostered a more collaborative relationship with the food industry. He noted the establishment of more NABL-accredited laboratories, which has bolstered the credibility of the food testing process.

Nestlé’s relationship with FSSAI remains respectful and non-confrontational, even amid challenges. Earlier this year, FSSAI tested Nestlé’s Cerelac for sugar content amid allegations, which the company contested.

Overall, Narayanan sees FSSAI as industry-centered rather than industry-friendly, indicating a constructive partnership aimed at ensuring food safety while fostering industry growth. This evolution positions FSSAI as a key player in enhancing food safety standards in India.
