Mangaluru
A protest was held under the leadership of the Baikampady unit of the Dakshina Kannada District Street Vendors’ Association. The protest was against the Mangaluru City Corporation’s (MCC) action of using bulldozers to evict poor street vendors from national highway land not owned by the city.
Addressing the protest, Honorary President of the Association BK Imthiyaz stated that MCC officials acted unlawfully and unjustly against poor street vendors.
On the other hand, they allowed the sale of firecrackers in areas unsafe due to the presence of petroleum and gas pipelines, thus paving the way for potential disasters.
Criticising the decision to permit firecracker sales in densely populated areas instead of keeping them away, he warned that if illegal operations against street vendors continue, they will organise an indefinite sit-in protest in front of the MCC zonal office in Surathkal.
Association’s District Secretary RS Santosh also spoke. Leaders including Shivappa, Dhananjay Surathkal, Hanif Idya, I Mohammad, Salaam Surathkal, Harish, MS Moyideen, Yashodhar Bangera, Veena, Shaila Sequeira, Sunil and others were present at the protest.
