Bengaluru, one of the fastest-growing cities globally, has reaffirmed its commitment to combating climate change through the Bengaluru Climate Action and Resilience Plan (BCAP). This comprehensive strategy aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing the city’s resilience to climate hazards.
The Bengaluru Climate Action Cell (CAC) was established in February 2024 as an institutional mechanism for implementing the BCAP. Chaired by Special Commissioner Preeti Gehlot and supervised by Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath, the CAC coordinates efforts among stakeholders, including government departments and civil society, to monitor climate actions and support climate budgeting.
The CAC has effectively raised awareness of the BCAP by hosting events and launching a dedicated micro-website to inform the public about its initiatives. To address the water crisis, the CAC promotes open well restoration and rainwater harvesting, planting over 80,000 saplings this monsoon.
A recent Data Jam hackathon engaged citizens in identifying local heat islands, emphasizing community involvement in climate issues. The ‘Friends of CAC’ forum has successfully united over 500 organizations, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
To enhance its initiatives, the CAC has introduced a Fellows program, engaging seven young professionals starting in November. These fellows will bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to tackle Bengaluru’s climate challenges.
