BCB launches inquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct in women’s cricket.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has initiated an investigation after former women’s captain Jahanara Alam accused former and current officials of sexual harassment. The 32-year-old pacer spoke in a YouTube interview about incidents during the 2022 Women’s World Cup in South Africa, naming then-selector and team manager Manjurul Islam among those involved.
Jahanara alleged that Manjurul “made inappropriate physical contact” and “often hugged or pressed female players to his chest” under the guise of encouragement. She urged the board to question other team members who may have witnessed similar behavior. Jahanara also highlighted that she had previously reported her concerns to the BCB, but no action had been taken at the time.
Manjurul, who is currently in China, denied the accusations, calling them “baseless” and insisting, “You can ask other girls in the team. This is all false.” The 46-year-old former left-arm seamer represented Bangladesh in 12 Tests and 34 ODIs between 1999 and 2004 and has held various coaching and managerial roles since retiring from international cricket.
Jahanara, who claimed 48 wickets in ODIs and 60 in T20Is across 135 matches, also named other officials in her complaint, prompting the BCB to act. The board confirmed that a committee has been formed to investigate and submit its findings within 15 working days.
BCB vice-president Shakhawat Hossain emphasized the seriousness of the matter, stating, “We have to investigate this, since it’s a serious matter.” In a statement late Thursday, the board reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a “safe, respectful, and professional environment” for all players.
The inquiry marks a significant step in addressing concerns over harassment in Bangladesh’s women’s cricket setup, with the cricketing community closely monitoring developments.
