Next month, India will host the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA 2024), attracting telecom leaders, experts, and academics from over 190 countries. This significant 10-day event, taking place from October 14 to 24 in New Delhi, marks the first time in 150 years of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) history that it is being held in India.
According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), hosting WTSA 2024 offers India a chance to shape the global telecom agenda, especially with advancements like 6G on the horizon. To kick off preparations, the DoT has launched WTSA 2024 Outreach Sessions across Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, providing students with a unique opportunity to learn and interact directly with industry experts.
Recent outreach sessions at Delhi Technical University, the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, and the Indian Institute of Information Technology in Hyderabad saw over 500 students participating in discussions about the significance of telecom standards in enhancing global connectivity and innovation. The sessions highlighted the importance of standardization for technologies like 5G and the future 6G.
Additionally, the DoT introduced the 5G-6G Hackathon 2024 to discover and encourage innovations tailored to India’s needs. WTSA 2024 underscores India’s rising role in the global technology arena as it prepares to take on key responsibilities in shaping the future of telecommunications.
