On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah once again extended their full support to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha in response to the severe flooding, rains, and landslides affecting the state. Chief Minister Saha updated both leaders about the devastating flood situation over the phone, marking the first major flood in Tripura in over thirty years.
Home Minister Shah assured that a central team would visit Tripura soon to evaluate the damage caused by the floods and landslides. According to Saha, preliminary assessments estimate the damage to infrastructure, crops, and properties at around Rs 15,000 crore, with this figure potentially rising after further evaluation.
In a message posted on X, Chief Minister Saha expressed his gratitude to both Modi and Shah for their immediate support. He noted that while the situation has somewhat improved with floodwaters receding, around 1.17 lakh people are still housed in 525 relief camps. The floods have claimed 31 lives, with additional injuries from landslides across six of the state’s eight districts.
The ongoing relief efforts include teams from the National and State Disaster Response Forces, along with 500 Civil Defence volunteers, who are distributing food and assisting affected areas. Despite some highways being damaged, many are gradually reopening.
