On Saturday, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav condemned the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, calling it barbaric and emphasizing the need for justice. Yadav expressed his concern for the doctors who have gone on strike to protest the tragic incident involving a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The violent attack on August 9 has triggered widespread protests across the country, with the medical community demanding justice and highlighting workplace safety issues for women. In response, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) called for a nationwide 24-hour withdrawal of services on Saturday, affecting all modern medicine doctors.
At All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, doctors held a protest march, chanting We want justice and displaying signs. IMA Secretary General Dr. Anil Kumar J Nayak expressed hope that the government will enact the Central Protection Act (CPA) as demanded by the medical community. Despite meetings with Union Minister JP Nadda and other officials, concrete actions are still awaited.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also addressed the issue, acknowledging the seriousness of the case and its implications for medical staff safety. He described it as a major societal concern, reflecting the widespread agitation among the public and medical professionals alike.
