Historically, the absence of a Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for a decade underscores the unique political landscape where no non-ruling party secured the requisite seats. Gandhi’s dual victories from Raebareli and Wayanad in the recent elections highlight his electoral success, with significant margins over his opponents.
Meanwhile, Congress announced Priyanka Gandhi’s candidacy from Wayanad following Rahul Gandhi’s decision to retain Raebareli. If successful, this move would see three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family concurrently serving in Parliament.
As the Leader of the largest opposition party, Gandhi’s role includes membership in pivotal parliamentary committees and selection panels responsible for appointing heads of key statutory bodies.
The ongoing parliamentary sessions, inaugurated on June 24 for the 18th Lok Sabha and upcoming sessions of the Rajya Sabha, underscore the legislative agenda and national priorities set for deliberation.
