Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh highlighted on Wednesday that there has been a noticeable decrease in drug trafficking cases in the state, crediting support from both hill and valley communities along with security forces for their cooperation with the administration’s efforts.

According to Singh, satellite data mapping indicates a significant reduction of 50-60% in poppy plantations across Manipur. He emphasized the urgent need to completely eliminate the drug menace from the state.

Thanks to the active involvement of village chiefs from the hills, civil societies in the valleys, and our dedicated security personnel, we have seen a decline in drug trafficking in Manipur. Satellite data also confirms a reduction of 50-60% in poppy cultivation, Singh stated during an event commemorating the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illegal Trafficking.

Singh recalled the severe impact of drug-related issues in Manipur during the 1990s, which also escalated HIV-positive cases to one of the highest rates in India.

He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to combating drug abuse, highlighting successful operations leading to the arrest of smugglers and individuals linked to international drug cartels.

To mark the occasion, the chief minister inaugurated a bike rally from his secretariat, involving over a hundred officers and security personnel. They aimed to raise awareness about the importance of combating cross-border illegal trafficking, with Singh pledging continued efforts with public support to eradicate drugs from Manipur.
