BMRCL To Install Platform Screen Doors For Enhanced Metro Safety

Must read

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced plans to install Platform Screen Doors (PSD) at metro stations for the first time.

Despite the deployment of security personnel across stations on the green and blue lines, incidents of suicide attempts and safety breaches, such as passengers crossing the yellow line in rush, remain persistent challenges. To mitigate these risks, BMRCL has opted for glass platform screen doors that will only open at the metro train entrance gates.

Alstom Transport India has secured the tender for implementing PSDs across stations on two key metro routes: the Kalena Agrahara – Nagawara Pink Line spanning 21 km, and the Central Silk Board – KRpura – Kempegowda International Airport Blue Line covering 56 km. The project, costing ₹857 crore, will see full height platform screen doors on the Pink Line and half height platform screen gates (PSG) on the Blue Line.

The contract includes a comprehensive management plan for five years, with Alstom also tasked with training security personnel to operate the new system effectively. Financial support for the initiative is being provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The introduction of PSDs marks a crucial step towards ensuring safer and more secure metro travel in Bengaluru, reflecting BMRCL’s commitment to passenger welfare and operational excellence.
