The decision by the state government to hike petrol and diesel prices by ₹3 and ₹3.5 respectively has sparked outrage among citizens and opposition leaders alike. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has strongly criticized the move, accusing the government of burdening the common man to fill its depleted coffers.

AAP’s State Media Coordinator, Jagdish V., lambasted the Congress-led government, alleging that the increase in fuel taxes reflects its financial mismanagement. He pointed out that despite implementing schemes reminiscent of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s popular initiatives, such as Grilahakshmi, Grihajyoti, and Shakti, the government has failed to curb corruption or manage finances effectively.

By raising taxes on petrol and diesel, the government is betraying its promise to support the poor and middle class, Jagdish remarked during a press conference in the city. He criticized the administration for transferring its administrative failures onto the shoulders of the masses, exacerbating the financial strain already felt due to inflation, unemployment, and rising healthcare costs.

Highlighting the disparity between the successful implementation of free schemes in Delhi and the financial strain in Karnataka, Jagdish questioned the sustainability of the state government’s initiatives funded by loans. He expressed disappointment over what he termed as an “anti-people move” by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s government, especially at a time when prices of essential commodities are also on the rise.

As petrol prices soar past the hundred-rupee mark and diesel nears ₹90, everyday essentials become more expensive, further burdening the common people, Jagdish lamented. He urged the government to reconsider its decision and prioritize the welfare of the people over fiscal measures that adversely affect livelihoods.
