Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) stated that a worker from a subsidiary was discovered collapsed in a rest area at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and was subsequently confirmed dead.
TEPCO stated on Friday that the male worker, who was employed by TEPCO subsidiary Tokyo Power Technology Ltd. and was in his 50s, was discovered fallen in a state of cardiac arrest on Thursday while working on the nuclear facility’s decommissioning.
The victim was brought to the hospital, but TEPCO and the source both says that he was later declared dead.
TEPCO reports that the worker had been performing backfilling work in an area that had been dug for a water quality survey near the plant’s No. 2 reactor since around 11 a.m. local time that day. This work is considered to be in the plant’s yellow zone, which calls for protective clothing.
According to TEPCO, the worker had no medical conditions before the work and had not been exposed to radiation.
It said there is a low possibility that the death was related to employment, but it will refrain from answering questions regarding the cause of death due to the family’s wishes.
