Delhi Hospital Fire Tragedy: NCPCR Takes Cognizance After Death Of Seven Newborn Babies

Following the tragic death of seven newborns at a Delhi hospital, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has launched an investigation, an official confirmed. NCPCR Chief Priyank Kanoongo stated on X, The Commission has taken cognizance of the fire incident at a hospital in Vivek Vihar, Delhi, resulting in the deaths of newborn babies. An NCPCR team will visit the hospital on Sunday to investigate. Official information will be shared after the visit.

The fire broke out at a baby care center in Shahdara, Delhi, leading to the death of seven newborns, as reported by the police on Sunday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Chaudhary detailed that the fire at Baby Care Newborn Hospital was reported to Vivek Vihar police station around 11:30 pm on Saturday. A police team arrived promptly to find the fire affecting the hospital and an adjacent building.

DCP Chaudhary mentioned that 12 newborns were admitted to the hospital at the time, with one already deceased prior to the fire. The police, along with others, managed to rescue the remaining 12 newborns, transferring them to East Delhi Advance NICU Hospital for treatment. Firefighters also arrived quickly and extinguished the blaze.

Delhi Fire Service Chief Atul Garg reported that seven of the babies were declared dead, while five others are receiving treatment. The deceased infants’ bodies have been moved to GTB Hospital for postmortem examinations. Legal action is being taken against the hospital owner, Naveen Kichi, a resident of Paschim Vihar, Delhi.
