KFSD To Crack Down On Liquid Nitrogen Use In City

Must read

The Karnataka Food Safety (KFSD) and Quality Department have announced plans to clamp down on the use of liquid nitrogen in food items across Bengaluru and other areas. The decision comes amidst growing concerns over the potential dangers posed by its usage, particularly in items like biscuits, beer, and ice cream.

Liquid nitrogen, commonly employed for rapid food cooling and creating smoke effects, has raised alarm due to its life-threatening nature. In light of this, the Tamil Nadu government recently banned its direct application in food products, mandating complete evaporation before consumption.

This chemical, utilized by pharmaceutical and chemical industries for cooling purposes, is known for its extreme coldness, capable of causing tissue damage upon contact. Past incidents, such as a case in a Gurugram pub where a patron suffered severe internal injuries after consuming a beverage laced with liquid nitrogen, underscore the risks associated with its mishandling.

Commissioner D. Randeep of the Health and Family Welfare Department emphasized the existing regulations under the Food Safety and Quality Act-2006, prohibiting the inclusion of liquid nitrogen as an ingredient. Despite this, some continue to flout the rules, posing a significant health hazard. Strict enforcement measures are slated to be implemented to curb its unauthorized usage, ensuring public safety and well-being.
