Property tax collection from Bengaluru’s Mahadevapura zone, housing numerous startups and multinational firms, has surpassed the Rs 1,000-crore mark for the first time. This achievement has contributed to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) securing a substantial revenue windfall of Rs 3,900 crore in the fiscal year 2023-24.
According to recent data, the BBMP’s head office has reported property tax revenue amounting to Rs 3,863.63 crore, with expectations of a further increase of Rs 40 crore once zonal officers complete pending bank-related tasks.
Mahadevapura zone, which previously contributed Rs 990 crore and Rs 813 crore in the preceding fiscal years, has witnessed a notable revenue surge to Rs 1,039 crore. The East zone, centrally located in Bengaluru, follows closely behind with a collection of Rs 681 crore. Notably, most zones have shown improvement compared to the previous year.
While the BBMP had anticipated crossing the Rs 4,000 crore mark by March, the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections slowed down the revenue recovery drive as officers were assigned election-related duties. However, the BBMP aims to achieve property tax revenue of Rs 5,000 crore in the fiscal year 2024-25.
Officials have allocated Rs 1,200 crore from property tax revenue for the white-topping of roads, aiming to enhance commuting experiences for citizens.
Murli Govindarajulu, a member of Whitefield Rising, underscores the importance of increased funding for wards in peripheral areas, including Mahadevapura zone, which comprises a significant number of villages amalgamated into the BBMP. He calls for greater investment in public infrastructure projects such as toilets and parks to address the existing disparity between population density and available amenities.
