UGC Mulling JEE-Like Common Counselling For UG Admissions Using CUET Scores

Sources indicate that the University Grants Commission (UGC) is considering the possibility of conducting unified counselling for undergraduate admissions based on CUET scores, similar to medical and engineering courses. A committee comprising officials from various universities has been established by the UGC to explore this idea, with five prominent universities enlisted for a trial run. However, there is no clear timeline for implementation pending the committee’s assessment of feasibility.

According to an insider, the committee will conduct an internal pilot study to weigh the advantages and disadvantages. This proposed system aims to streamline admissions by offering a single platform for students to submit their preferences instead of applying separately to multiple universities. The final decision hinges on the committee’s findings and subsequent stakeholder consultations.

UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar refrained from commenting on the matter. Previously, the commission had contemplated merging the JEE and NEET with CUET-UG, introduced in 2022, although no progress has been made on this front.

CUET, serving as the primary entrance exam for undergraduate admissions in central universities, has witnessed over 14.9 lakh registrations, making it the country’s second-largest entrance exam after NEET-UG. Scheduled from May 15 to 31, this year’s exam will follow a hybrid format, blending computer-based testing with pen-and-paper modes for specific subjects to accommodate diverse registration volumes.
