The BJP criticized the Left government in Kerala for its decision to approach the Supreme Court regarding President Droupadi Murmu, alleging that it showcased the Marxist party’s bias against women and tribal communities. V Muraleedharan, a senior party leader and Union Minister, claimed that the CPI(M) has consistently held an ‘anti-woman’ stance, even opposing Murmu’s nomination to the highest post in the country.
To support his argument, Muraleedharan pointed out the absence of any woman member in the Left party’s polit bureau until 2022. This criticism from the saffron party came after the LDF government defended its move to challenge Murmu’s actions regarding four bills passed by the state assembly, citing ‘significant constitutional implications.’
Muraleedharan stated that the CPI (M)’s historical aversion towards women explains their opposition to President Murmu. He emphasized that while bill delays were not new, challenging the President’s actions was unprecedented. He also questioned the legality of a civil servant and a political leader jointly filing a case. The BJP’s remarks followed the Kerala government’s plea to the SC, naming various government officials, including the Union government and the Kerala Governor, in the case. The state government sought a declaration of the President’s actions as unconstitutional, along with other reliefs.
