Sulthan Bathery and Tannirbhavi, scenic spots along the Phalguni River in the city,  are popular destinations where people gather for leisure. The ferry boat service from Sulthan Bathery to Tannirbhavi adds to the charm, attracting numerous visitors. However, a concerning trend has emerged with the increasing pollution of the Phalguni River along these stretches.

Evenings at Sulthan Bathery and Tannirbhavi, intended for relaxation, are marred by the sight of litter strewn along the riverbanks. Despite the presence of seating arrangements and parks overlooking the Phalguni River at Sulthan Bathery, the surroundings are tarnished by garbage, including alcohol bottles, tetra packs, plastic, thermocol pieces, coconut shells, and even medical items.

Sadly, despite the provision of dustbins, the public continues to litter in the water, demonstrating a disregard for the environment. Local officials appear to be lax in imposing hefty fines for littering in water bodies. Additionally, the commercial area around Sulthan Bathery, despite regular waste collection, witnesses dumping of garbage into the river.

The public’s demands for development and tourist facilities clash with their responsibility to maintain cleanliness. Notably, environmentalists like Jeeth Milan Roche, Dinesh Holla, activist Nagaraj, and the Anti-pollution drive (APD) consistently raise awareness about the consequences of garbage dumping. Unfortunately, public negligence persists.Environmentalist Jeeth Milan Roche says, we are fortunate to have rivers like Netravati and Phalguni, but regrettably, they are being polluted by the improper disposal of items such as liquor bottles, sanitary pads, mixed waste, and even medical waste. During clean-up efforts, it is disheartening to find boxes full of expired medicines. It is crucial to uphold the cleanliness of our rivers. When the river water undergoes laboratory testing, it lacks the essential characteristics of natural river water. Conducting such tests can benefit the fisherman community.
