Aliya Assadi, a student of the Government PU College for Girls in Udupi that was the epicentre of the hijab row, has tweeted chief minister Basavaraj Bommai to reconsider the ban on the hijab inside classrooms.
Aliya, whose PU final exams start on April 22, wrote: “You still have a chance to stop our future from getting ruined. You can make a decision to allow us to write exams wearing hijab. Please consider this. We are the future of this country.”
Aliya is one of the six girls who had demanded permission from the high court to wear the hijab inside classrooms. After the high court declined their request, the girls said they would not go to class without the hijab and would fight the order in every possible way legally.
Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner KV Rajendra in a video conference on Wednesday directed officials to make necessary preparations for the exams. All examination centres will be sanitised and Section 144 of the CrPC will be valid around examination centres.
The deputy commissioner asked taluk tahsildars to be in constant touch with the deputy director of PU education (DDPUE). Police personnel will be present at the examination centres.
The district has 51 examination centres. A total of 31,308 students will appear for exams, of which 15,652 are boys and 15,656 are girls.
As many as 4,329 will appear for arts, 14,987 for commerce and 11,992 in the science stream, said DDPUE Jayanna.
Udupi deputy commissioner M Kurma Rao said students should be allowed to write the exams without any confusion and panic. Chairing a preparatory meeting on Tuesday, he said that examinations will be conducted in 28 centres and a total of 15,272 students will write them. Of the total number of students appearing for the exams, 4,792 are from the science stream, 7,850 in commerce and 1,524 are in the arts stream.
The deputy commissioner said action will be taken against those who spread fake messages on social media and spread panic among students.
